Online research for students

Our website contains information on most steps you will take during your online research project. Below are some quick links to help you on your way. Good luck.

Setting up your study

First, make sure to request ethical approval for your study before starting data collection using the UU-SER tool. More general information on Ethical approval can also be found here.

Once you received approval you can start building your experiment using one of the Online Survey Tools provided by the UU. We recommend using Qualtrics for questionnaire studies and Gorilla when building online experiments. We also offer several packages to facilitate the acquisition of digital informed consent and any information additional information you might need to pay your participants in line with the guidelines of the FETC and the GDPR.

Data collection and paying participants

An overview of different options for data collection can be found here. We recommend using Prolific for fast data collection in specific populations. However, do note that most participants will be from the UK and USA. Prolific also facilitates the payment of participants in an easy way. More general information on paying your participants can be found here.

Data processing and Data storage

Once data has been collected, you will want to store your data on a UU server. This gives your supervisor access to your data as well and archives your project. More information on data storage can be found here. You can discuss with your supervisor which storage is most suitable for your purpose.

If you require particular analysis software, make sure to check if that software is available on MyWorkplace. We also provide software for data processing and statistical analysis in case it is not available on MyWorkplace. For more taxing calculations, you can also discuss the possibility of using our computational servers (Windows & Linux) with your supervisor.
